Ode to the Grassland
By Wu Zhanglian
The vast desert spreads like silk, and the dome-like sky hangs over the wilderness. The veins of the earth surge from Kunlun, transforming into a boundless plain; the light of heaven pours with rolling clouds, painting a thousand years of glory. The grassland of Inner Mongolia is not merely a creation of heaven and earth, but a homeland where all beings coexist. It connects the green foothills of the Greater Khingan Range in the east, holds the vast sands of the Qilian Mountains in the west, rests against the dragon-like spine of the Great Wall in the south, and reaches the distant sky near the North Star in the north. Spanning three temperature zones, it displays distinct landscapes of meadows, typical grasslands, and deserts; gathering the nectar of hundreds of rivers, it nurtures flocks of cattle and sheep, sturdy camels and horses, and fierce eagles and vultures. Through the yurts of the Xiongnu, the frost and moon of the Han and Tang dynasties, the iron cavalry of the Liao and Jin dynasties, and the grand songs of the Yuan and Qing dynasties, it has become a sacred land yearned for by the world, a pure land where all hearts unite.
The scenery of the four seasons each has its unique charm. In spring, the ice rivers crack and rumble, the frozen earth softens, and the grass, seen from afar, shimmers with light green mist. Herdsmen shake off their coats and drive calves back to old farmlands; wild geese fly north, carrying spring to mend old eaves. Wild flowers dot the land like stars, embroidering the green carpet; streams sing like lutes, splashing against white stones. In summer, the green waves reach the clouds, dispelling all heat. Horses gallop by day, and the Milky Way hangs over the wilderness at night. At the Nadam Festival, the hooves of racing horses thunder like thunder shaking mountains; wrestlers compete with strength that seems to split clouds and crack stones. Before the yurts, copper pots boil with the fragrance of milk; at the foot of Aobao Mountain, hada scarves glow in the moonlight. The Morigele River curves like a jade belt floating from heaven; the Hulunbuir Grassland is dotted with sheep like pearls falling from clouds. In autumn, the sea of grass turns golden, and populus euphratica burn like fire. The strong wind passes, and leaves dance gracefully. In Ejina Banner, ten thousand trees draped in gold resemble Van Gogh’s paintings; in Xilingol, a thousand horses return from grazing, cutting through the round, melting sunset. Buckwheat sways like bells, their sound echoing through ten miles of autumn light; flax drying grounds fill a thousand households with fragrance at dusk. In winter, snow covers the vast land, sculpted like jade; wind rolls silver sand, leaving heaven and earth clear and pure. Horse-drawn sleds plow through the frozen river like a mirror; skiers dash through the jade-like sky. The sea of lights in Manzhouli reflects snow into an ever-bright city; the wind in Yakeshi carves frost crystals into ten thousand pear blossoms.
As for the scenic grasslands, each holds its unique soul. Hulunbuir, the Kingdom of Pastures, boasts boundless green waves shining under the sun and sky. The Morigele River, winding gently like intestines, is honored as the most tortuous river under heaven; the Ergun Wetland, home to hundreds of birds, is crowned the best wetland in Asia. The sunset at Heishantou dyes the distant grasslands with molten gold; the morning cooking smoke in Shiwei Village, swirling like thin silk, leads to a paradise on earth. Huiteng Xile, the Summit of Coolness, features alpine meadows with wind turbines reaching the sky. Men showcase the Three Manly Arts – archery with bows curved like the moon, arrows chasing shooting stars; women dance in groups, their sleeves fluttering like rainbows, steps treading like stars. Bonfires burn with passion, and long songs pierce the clouds to invite immortals to drink; when dew falls and yurts are quiet, one sleeps soundly with the fragrance of grass in dreams. Chilechuan is the grassland of ballads. The eternal song Ode to Chile still echoes over the Yinshan Mountains. Intangible cultural heritage passes down ancient rhymes, carried by the long wind for ten thousand miles. Gazing at Hohhot, the green waves stretch endlessly; looking back at the Green Tomb, the sound of the pipa whispers with Hu melodies. Ulan Butong is the grassland of paintings. Straight birch trees stand like lines of poetry on the grassland; clear history records the grand autumn hunts of the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors. The water of General’s Lake once reflected armors and horses, now mirrors the smiles of tourists; film and television shooting frames capture fleeting moments, engraving the marks of time.
Moreover, the customs and human feelings are as mellow as wine. Herdsmen welcome guests with hada, offering wine in silver bowls while singing first; entering yurts, they follow tradition – left in, right out – and take tea with both hands, bowing respectfully. The matouqin (horse-head fiddle) sobs, playing the joys and sorrows of heaven and earth; khoomei (throat singing) rumbles, breathing in the loneliness of primeval times. The Andai Dance spins, red scarves fluttering like burning fire; the Ordos wedding carries promises as heavy as mountains and seas. A variety of delicacies embody wisdom: hand-held mutton is tender and original; roast whole lamb is crispy and fragrant, served to distinguished guests. Urmo (milk curd) is as white as snow; hurdaq (fermented milk curd) is sweet and sour, refreshing the mouth. Milk tea brews through days and months; brick tea relieves greasiness; strong wine intoxicates mountains and rivers; mare’s milk soothes travel fatigue.
Alas! The soul of the grassland lies not in its vastness, but in its inclusiveness; not in its remoteness, but in its tenacity. In the past, Su Wu held his festival (symbol of mission) and remained unyielding even as snow gnawed at his felt; Genghis Khan rode horses, drawing his bow to shoot eagles with ambition to conquer the world. Today, the descendants of herdsmen uphold the simplicity of a thousand years while embracing the tide of the times. From camel bells breaking the starry night to high-speed trains cutting through the green sea; from Aobao prayers for longevity to global celebrations shared by all. Now, with Kunlun as an inkstone, the Yellow River as ink, and the long wind as a brush, I write this eternal ode; I wish to borrow the wings of a roc to spread this masterpiece to the four seas, so that the world may know: this Inner Mongolian grassland is not only a paradise on earth, but also a beacon of civilization and a spiritual homeland.
